It was Gibran who said, In only one drop of water are found all the secrets of the ocean.  What a privilege it is for the drop deemed worthy of such an honor. How proud it must feel to be entrusted with such glorious distinction..
But it must also be exhausting for a single drop to harbor confidences of such vast proportion.
Does it yearn to relinquish its burden and flow freely amongst it's kind unencumbered? I wonder... Or perhaps the noble task of safeguarding the ocean's treasures has become a vital part of it's very existence...

I don't know, but I find myself fascinated.

Ramadan 1430: Day 9 (Aug 30th)
I've never understood why when someone cries, people console them by telling them to not cry; Tears are cathartic. Offer solace but don't advise against weeping.

There is sacredness in tears; they are not the mark of weakness, but of strength. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues - they are messengers of overwhelming grief and unspeakable love. (W. Irvin)

Ramadan 1430: Day 5

It is He Who created the heavens and the earth in truth, and on the Day of Resurrection He will say: "Be!" and it shall become. His word is the truth, His will be the dominion on the Day when the trumpet will be blown. All Knower of the unseen and the seen. He is the All Wise, well-aware of all things. Ramadan 1430: Day 4

There is not even a single leaf that stirs in the breeze except by the will of the Almighty.
----
I have some of the nicest orthodox Jewish colleagues at work. Its so sweet how everyone tiptoes around you during Ramadan... is careful not to mention food around you as if you will  shatter at the mention of anything edible :) A couple of my Jewish colleagues are the most considerate. There was an orthodox Jewish pharmacist with me at the satellite I staffed last night who wouldn't let me do my unit-based rounds.. insisted upon doing them for me since I was fasting. Then when he was going down to the gift shop to buy candy for everyone (he does this regularly) he went to each individual person in the satellite and whispered in their ear asking what they wanted so I wouldn't overhear him asking them and feel left out or get hungry. Of course I knew what he was doing, and it made his gesture all the sweeter. When I went down to the chapel to pray he insisted I take my time and covered the pharmacy for us. And he asked me at least three times if I had eaten after iftar time... I was touched.
Look forward to repaying the favor when it is the Jewish time for fasting. Thank you J :)

Mountains of Makkah

(by Zain Bikha)
Oh Mountains of Makkah what can you say
Of the day that Abraham passed your way
And he was instructed by God to build
A house of peace where people will pray
And they will come on every lean camel and out of every ravine
They will come for the purpose of praising Allah, glorifying Allah
O mountains of Makkah what can you tell
of the day when stones from the sky fell
Destroying an army determined to break
The house of Allah that Abraham built
O mountains of Makkah how was the dawn
On the day that my Prophet Muhammad (saw) was born
How did it feel knowing he was to be
the last and most beloved of all
Rasul of Allah, Nabi of Allah
O mountains of Makkah you were there
When the Prophet Muhammad (saw) climbed down in despair
Engraved in his heart were the words of his Lord
To all of mankind this was his call
La illaha ilAllah Muhammad-u-Rasulallah
O people praise only Allah, Glorify Allah
O mountains of Makkah how did you mourn
On the day that the beloved returned to ourLord
And up til the last breath escaped from his lips
He prayed that his Ummah would find success
O mountains of Makkah how will it feel
When the earth shall quake and tremble with fear
And we shall be gathered together to stand
In the court of Allah with our deeds at hand
O how we pray that on that day
We'll be with those to whom Allah will say
Peace be with you, I am pleased with you
O mountains of Makkah Bear witness that I
To the oneness of Allah do I testify
For all that He's given me, how can I deny
My purpose in life should be only to cry:
La illaha ilallah Muhammad-u-Rasulallah
There is no God but Allah,
Muhammad (saw) is His messenger.

Ramadan 1430: Day 3

Missed suhoor and prayed Fajr kazaa because I couldn't wake up.. Am annoyed with myself.
Last night's iftari is still on my mind. Alhamdollilah.. food is good.
My sister-in-law exclaimed I had noor . I smiled. It's not my noor.. if anything, it's light reflected by the truth of the Holy Qur'an and Sunnah that Allah (swt) has humbled me with by placing in my heart.
I've seen that light on other people's faces. Def don't see it in myself yet, but maybe one day if Allah wills, I can be amongst those blessed individuals.
Looking forward to work tonight

We love people and things as if they are ours to love forever. We assume haque, or right, over them, and protest belligerently or mournfully if they are taken away. How silly of us; everything we own is from Allah (swt) and everyone belongs to Him. Inalilahe wa ina'ilahe rajeyun... (to Him we belong, and to Him we will return)

Surah Al-Baqarah Verse 255: Ayat-ul Qudsi (Verse of the Throne)

In the Name of Allâh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Allâh! Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists. Neither slumber, nor sleep overtake Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission? He knows what happens to them (His creatures) in this world, and what will happen to them in the Hereafter . And they will never compass anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills. His Kursî[] extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

Ramadan 1430: Day 2

When you surrender yourself and wholly submit, there is an irrefutable beauty and truth to be discovered in the Qur'an.
I missed a halaqa I was invited to attend because - for the first time I can remember - I lost track of time and my surroundings as I read the Qur'an and listened to it's recitation. I'm not one to cry easily. In fact, through some of the most difficult times in my life, I barely shed any tears. But today, as I contemplated its message, they flowed.
Ya'Allah, do not stem them for the remaining 28 days of this blessed month.

Ramadan 1430: Day 1

Hadhrat Usman (ra) narrates that Rasulallah (saw) said, 'The best amongst you is he who reads the Quran, and teaches it to others.' (Sahih Bukhari, Tirmidhzi)

-----
For the first time in many years, I really want to try reading and understanding Qur'an this Ramadan as much as I possibly can. In Ramadans past, I would read the Arabic Qur'an because it was obligatory, but I didn't benefit from it as much as I'd like because I can't understand Arabic. Attending the halaqas facilitates this a little, but I don't get to attend nearly enough. Ideally I would love to take Arabic and Tafseer/Tajweed classes at some point to improve my comprehension and learn to recite better, but until then my brilliant friend suggested another avenue I could explore: listening to verses online with English translation, while following along with my own hard copy of the Qur'an! It's such a simple, effective solution, I wonder why i didn't think of it myself.
So inshallah inshallah that's what I will do. Each day in Ramadan I hope to complete at least one Juz. Ya'Allah, please keep me steadfast in my efforts, strengthen my resolve, and help me stay on track so I can do this.

Inalilahe wa ina'ilahe rajeyun.

FATIMA J. CHAUDRY (1978-1997)
Too few years together
And too many to face apart
Where has our time together gone
When did it ever start
I'd hoped Allah'd hear my prayers
And you would come back to me
Safe and fine and happy
In the arms of destiny
Now watching you lie there so peacefully
I see it wasn't meant to be
You were with us a short time
But now you must be free
Emptiness and sorrow fill my heart
Regrets at this steep cost
It is you who is now gone
But it is I who is lost
I pray for you my sister
That you may reach the highest mountain
I pray that you are happy
In the love and serenity of heaven
I pray your every unfulfilled wish is fulfilled
And that all your dreams come true
And I hope you always realize
That I will never forget you.
(Sept. 1997)
in loving memory of my cousin and childhood best friend.

Bubbles and Bombs.

Reported Ibn Khuzaymah, Rasulallah (saw) said: 'Whoever draws nearer to Allah by performing any optional good deeds in this month shall receive the same reward as performing obligatory deeds at any other time; and whoever performs an obligatory deed, shall receive the reward of performing seventy obligations at any other time. It is the month of patience, and the reward of patience is Paradise . It is the month of charity, and a month in which a believer's sustenance is increased. Whoever gives food to a fasting person to break his fast shall have his sins forgiven, and he will be saved from the Hell-Fire, and he shall have the same reward as the fasting person, without his reward being diminished at all.'

(re-post Dec '08)
When I was in elementary school, I remember my teacher telling my class a story of the boy who lived in a plastic bubble. He lacked an effective immune system so his doctors ordered that he live in this bubble that would protect him from all pathogens. The little boy was constricted to his house and had to wear special suits to protect him. Eventually, as he grew older he wished to meet people and see the outside world. He’d built some immunity over the years but his doctors still advised against it. Eventually however, he left his bubble and ventured out anyway, although I don’t remember what happened next or how the story ended. I remember thinking to myself how silly it must be to live your entire life inside an enormous bubble and how relieved the little boy must have felt to burst free of it and live life normally.

At times like tonight, however, the notion of living life inside a bubble doesn’t seem so silly; bursting free of this bubble and facing up to reality doesn’t feel like such a relief either.
I’ve been following updates on various media outlets for the past couple days on the situation in Gaza, and I can’t sleep tonight. Various sights and snippets from reports cloud my mind while my imagination fills in the many blanks provided courtesy of biased media and limited coverage. Being an avid CNN Foxnews and Cspan junkie for some time now, the recent attacks in Gaza are not new to me. But whereas before I was mostly impervious to these occurrences, tonight I find it difficult to nonchalantly change the channel or turn the page.

Ignorance can be bliss, but my conscience can't excuse turning a blind eye while a mother helplessly holds her dying child on a deserted, smoke-permeated street; or a defenseless man is tortured mercilessly despite pleading his innocence; or hungry, terrified families huddle in basements and makeshift shelters while missiles rain overhead in the rubble-filled streets. I'm finding that feigning apathy - as countless civilians become victims of war and its atrocities while the government of a sovereign nation ruthlessly attacks innocent people with relative impunity and the world dispassionately observes or wrings its hands in consternation - no longer sits well with me. Rasulallah (saw) relayed: The believers in their affection, compassion, and love for one another is like one single body. If a part of it suffers from pain, the whole body will suffer in pain [Bukhari and Muslim]. It is true that these hardships are a test of faith and perseverance. The Qu’ran states:
And most certainly we should try you by means of fear, hunger, and loss of worldly goods, of life or of labor’s fruit. But give glad tiding unto those who are patient in adversity, who when the calamity befalls them, say, ‘Verily unto God we belong and verily unto him we shall return.' (2:155-156)

But tonight, I empathize and ache for the mu’mineen being tested whose names may be unknown but whose story should not go untold.. for the anguish of those who are suffering and the injured who cannot be treated properly in ill-equipped over-burdened facilities with inadequate supplies.. for those who have lost loved ones or consequently suffered as a result of not only in Gaza but all asinine wars ever initiated by egocentric, callous leaders intent primarily on fulfilling personal agendas.

Tonight, as I write this in the peace and comfort of my home – with my family safe and close by alhamdullilah – I reflect on my blessings and how I often take them for granted. Being physically far-removed from such turmoil and insanity makes it easy to become ensconced in a bubble of blissful ignorance. But as I become less immune to such injustices, my awakening conscience has evoked in me the desire to raise my voice. I am realizing that like the little boy in the story from elementary school, my bubble too has been pricked. Perhaps this gradual awareness and repudiation of the status quo is in fact amongst the greatest blessings. Narrated Abu Huraira, There is sadaqa to be given for every joint of the human body; and for every day on which the sun rises, there is a reward of sadaqa for the one who desires to establish justice among people [Bukhari].

Reward for good deeds is multiplied manifold in Ramadan; please donate if you can.

The Last Sermon

The Prophet PBUH delivered this last sermon on the Ninth Day of Dhul Hijjah 10 A.H. in the 'Uranah valley of Mount Arafat' (in Mecca).

After praising, and thanking Allah he said:

O People, lend me an attentive ear, for I know not whether after this year, I shall ever be amongst you again. Therefore listen to what I am saying to you very carefully and TAKE THESE WORDS TO THOSE WHO COULD NOT BE PRESENT HERE TODAY.

O People, just as you regard this month, this day, this city as Sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you. Remember that you will indeed meet your LORD, and that HE will indeed reckon your deeds. ALLAH has forbidden you to take usury (interest), therefore all interest obligation shall henceforth be waived. Your capital, however, is yours to keep. You will neither inflict nor suffer any inequity. Allah has Judged that there shall be no interest and that all the interest due to Abbas ibn 'Abd'al Muttalib (Prophet's uncle) shall henceforth be waived...

Beware of Satan, for the safety of your religion. He has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things.

O People, it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your women, but they also have rights over you. Remember that you have taken them as your wives only under Allah's trust and with His permission. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Do treat your women well and be kind to them for they are your partners and committed helpers. And it is your right that they do not make friends with any one of whom you do not approve, as well as never to be unchaste.

O People, listen to me in earnest, worship ALLAH, say your five daily prayers (Salah), fast during the month of Ramadan, and give your wealth in Zakat. Perform Hajj if you can afford to.

All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. Do not, therefore, do injustice to yourselves.

Remember, one day you will appear before ALLAH and answer your deeds. So beware, do not stray from the path of righteousness after I am gone.

O People, NO PROPHET OR APOSTLE WILL COME AFTER ME AND NO NEW FAITH WILL BE BORN. Reason well, therefore, O People, and understand words which I convey to you. I leave behind me two things, the QURAN and my example, the SUNNAH and if you follow these you will never go astray.

All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and those to others again; and may the last ones understand my words better than those who listen to me directly. Be my witness, O ALLAH, that I have conveyed your message to your people.

Lead me not into temptation; I can find the way myself.

Life's ironies amuse me :)

Sometimes I wonder if we're puppets on a string, and fate, the puppeteer. We are pulled in different directions, and don't know any better than to follow where we're led. We hit brick walls or become lost wandering through life's mazes, while it just laughs and shakes its head. Lol
What amuses me even more is when we think we control our destiny... that we can slip into the role of the puppet master and take control of the strings; guide our lives in the direction we want

Then I think I have a whack sense of humor (I really do), and go eat some Breyer's Fat Free Double Churned rich and creamy chocolate ice cream

Finding the right balance between deen and duniya has been a challenge for me - one I still struggle with on a daily basis. Most of my progress can probably be best illustrated by a sine wave, with peaks and troughs. But lately - even though there's a lot I still want to improve on - I've been feeling maybe I'm reaching steady-state concentrations. iA Ramadan'll facilitate that feeling.
Ramadan.
It's almost that time already: sahoors, taraweh prayer, running into friends I haven't seen the entire year, fasting, iftaris, Amir Liaquat.
.... can't wait :)

Dot Coms & Hermits

(re-post)
For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a love-hate relationship with my computer; i.e. I love it, it hates me. I’ve never been able to explain this strange phenomenon. Perhaps I emit anti-analog/digital pheromones that render CPU’s unable to function properly in my presence thus causing a cataclysmic sequence of events that leaves me feeling defeated and frustrated. Perhaps it’s because I’m the prototypical hapless unwitting consumer whose instruction manuals are always in Greek. Or - and I love Ellen - but perhaps it’s just, well, gay. Whatever the case, much to my dismay, over the years I’ve witnessed our relationship dwindling into one less of congenial mutualism and more of doomed resignation – with sentiments similar to those of a squabbling disinclined couple forced by circumstance to begrudgingly reside in close quarters for an extended period of time.
Personal grievances asides, I am willing to tolerate the more than occasional jam, fizzle, freeze, fade, blink, breakdown, misquote, data loss, lapse, and requisite parts replacement all for the convenience of shopping, paying bills, and banking from the comfort of my home. We can also thank this technology for the hermit world we now live in where phone calls, letters, and tangible forms of communication have become all but obsolete. Thanks to dot coms and other technological advances, personal interaction has been replaced by IM’s, emails, virtual Latif’s, texts, wall posts, pokes, prods, punctuation marks and expressive emoticons that convey our sentiments for us. Our generation’s modus operandi of conveying information has evolved enough to even encourage advocacy of proper etiquette classes. It can be especially difficult for novices to navigate a potential minefield using only syntax but no facial expressions, gestures, and tones of voice to clarify meanings. Such etiquette can be especially handy when surfing networking sites such as myspace, facebook, and friendster. These sites provide an alternate method of socializing that requires little physical effort but allows members to interact and keep in touch on an online forum. If one isn’t cautious and disciplined however, these sites can have an unhealthy potential for proselytizing unsuspecting members.
It starts out innocently enough. Randomly checking email one day, you notice a friend’s invitation to join, say, facebook. Disregarding it as junkmail, you check the box and click delete. A few weeks later you receive another invite to join. Slightly annoyed but interest mildly piqued, you skim the email cursorily but again delete it; social networking sites are for hermits who have no life, and you of course do. Promptly thereafter, you receive three more invites to join. In disbelief, you realize one of the invites is from your next-door-neighbor’s friend’s brother’s roommate whom you met briefly at a holiday party four years ago, and who also just happened to be a contender for People’s Smexiest Man Alive last year. After a moment’s hesitation, you lose the internal battle being waged. It can’t be that bad, you reassure yourself. Mentally bracing yourself, you take the plunge and sign up.
Through various friend finder tools and friend requests, you soon discover 1,438 friends you know well, barely, or not at all. Soon, you find yourself immersed in other people’s lives: who is engaged, married, and divorced; who has a baby, a baby mama, and baby daddy (or both); who graduated valedictorian, barely graduated, and who flunked high school and is now a waiter at Applebee’s. You discover your ex-crush knows the sister of your best friend’s wife’s cousin’s neighbor, and they are now married, with children. Thanks to extended network visibility, you now know your freshman year archnemesis flunked medical school and now sells cars at the local Carmax. Barely suppressing a grin, you make a mental note to pay him a visit sometime. Then, you happen to notice your bff’s almost-but-not-quite-yet fiancé’s inappropriate, risqué comments on another girl’s profile. And
then you see the pictures.. Jeezus Christ, you mumble to yourself, that SOB. This is almost like As The World Turns except you are in a starring role. After brief contemplation, you logout and reach for your cellphone...

And so it begins. Gradually, as you become a seasoned aficionado, you begin making discoveries:

1. You see glamour shots posted of the girl you secretly admired from afar in high school, and find yourself infatuated all over again. Figuring a way past the firewalls, you begin logging into facebook at work, all the while glancing surreptitiously over your shoulder and praying fervently that your supervisor doesn’t stroll past your cubicle at that moment. Oh well… sacrificing your lame job would be worth the five second view of glamour girl’s most recent profile picture updated only six times a day. Before you know it, you find yourself overwhelmed with the urge to view her profile at least twenty times daily, or you are not complete.
It's okay; my friend tells me AlAnon proclaims step one is admitting you have a problem. (You would have to google step two, she skipped that session).

2. You begin recognizing in yourself narcissistic, exhibitionist tendencies you never noticed before. Secretly hoping to be the envy of your friends (and frenemies), you rent a maserati and find yourself uploading pictures of you posing in front of the car with your latest prada dangling from your left wrist at sunset on a beach in La Jolla, CA with your newly acquired significant other. Of course, your only intention is to share the pictures with your twice-removed father’s cousin living in the deserts of Nairobi who barely speaks English and only logs on bi-annually to wish you Eid Mubarak, you justify to yourself. If anyone else happens to notice them, (shrug) oh well… at least you
tried to change your privacy settings.

3. You soon find yourself planning getaways to exotic locales for the sole purpose of capturing awe-inspiring, travel brochure worthy photos to upload to your page promptly upon your return. You forget to enjoy the trip in the process, but that’s alright. You can always re-live the experience vicariously through your photos. The exclamations your latest album will produce is well-worth the sacrifice.

4. As inspiration strikes, you discover status updates can also be particularly habit-forming. You find yourself fighting the urge to post witty updates on the hour that regale your present frame of mind or the lyrics to a top 20 tune; never mind the fact that your cleverness is actually a source of infinite amusement for friends who are wrestling with the same impulses.

5. You soon begin to realize that a notification or two can also make your heart skip a beat or two. Relax, it’s alright as long as no one else notices. Unless you have several notifications and accordingly, your heart skips several beats and you go into v-tach or exacerbate some other underlying arrhythmia requiring a defribillator and the attention of an emergency response team in which case your story may be considered of interest to CNN producers and ran on the evening segment of ‘No Bias No Bull’ with Campbell Brown.
(Was that a run-on sentence? my hs AP English teacher just turned in her grave). But the likelihood of that happening is so slim that you allow yourself to experience a small thrill upon seeing the small red flag in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

6. Your BGE bill is late, two term papers you have yet to start are due tomorrow, and your poor neglected cat is starving. You acknowledge these networking sites are distracting and highly unproductive. Summoning enormous willpower, you decide to deactivate. After doing so, you shutdown the offensive computer and gaze at the blank screen in front of you. Nothing happens. Feeling vastly relieved, you head to the kitchen for a fortifying snack before feeding the cat and beginning research on extracorporeal life support systems from a neonatal perspective.
However, two hours into a mind-numbing analysis of inhaled nitrous oxide versus ECMO for membrane oxygenation in neonates with hypoxic respiratory failure, your ADD kicks in full force and you desperately search for a distraction. Unable to help yourself, you kiss your resolve goodbye and reactivate after a grand total of 3 hours and 46 minutes… so much for self discipline

… and so the dismal saga continues. Ultimately, your once active social life is reduced to the glossy 15” LCD screen of... yes, your computer. But every cloud has a silver lining. At least you can shop, pay bills, and bank from the comfort of your living room by doing little more than lifting a finger. While reading this (if you made it this far), it’s possible you may wonder why much of this is written in second person singular/plural. Well… because it
is about you, silly. Me? Hermits and other arthropods don't exist in my world. And even though it is distracting, annoying, exasperating, unable to return my affection, and often simply useless, you can bet your last ferrero rochero I won’t be selling my computer on ebay anytime soon.

Fireflies and Rain.

Strange how you can relax in good company and feel so alone, and be by yourself yet not be lonely one bit.
----
It's pouring out tonight. I woke up late this morning. Even though it was busy at work today, I still don't feel sleepy. Mama made hot chocolate with halal marshmellows after she came home from bhabi's; we sat on the swing out on the patio, mugs in hand, and chatted until she started yawning. Just as she was about to doze off, I gently nudged her and told her to go to bed. Kissing my forehead and telling me to not stay up too late, she gathered up the mugs. I smiled. Mothers worry so much. I think it comforts them to fuss.
Promising to head in soon, I watched her go inside, then turned my attention to the dark, rainy night. I noticed fireflies glowing through the downpour. How pretty they looked in the dark wet night. I remember when we were young, my brothers and I would catch them and put them in clear glass jars. We'd make holes in the metal tops so they wouldn't suffocate, and feed them flower petals.
Absentmindedly curling a lock of hair around my fingers, I tried not to think of how many poor fireflies we'd unwittingly killed.
Through the screen door, I heard my cellphone ring but ignored it. It rang twice again, then fell silent. Far off in the distance a siren wailed.
Watching rain fall is hypnotic. If you observe closely enough, you'll notice each individual drop elongated by the pull of gravity as it rushes headlong towards earth. It's rhythmic pitter-pattering cadence soothes as it mesmerizes.
Contentedly lost in thought, I don't know how much time elapsed before my brother opened the screen door.
Dumbo, it's late why are still out here. Come inside.
Jolted from my reverie, I chuckled.
Dumbo, it's late why are you still out here. Come inside, I mimicked.
Slowly rising from the swing, I stifled a yawn. I playfully ducked at him with the paper and made my way inside to sleep.

IV Poles and Elevator Rides

On my way to the cafeteria for my lunch break, I met a little patient on the elevator. She was maybe six or seven years old, frail, and alarmingly pale. Her enormous blue eyes peered curiously from underneath an oversized Orioles baseball cap that partially concealed a small head bald from bouts of chemotherapy.
Her too large, standard-issue hospital gown hung loosely on her thin frame, it's narrow straps wrapped twice around her little body in order to prevent it from coming loose. Feet clad snugly in rubber-soled socks, she was perched precariously atop a wheeled IV pole. Two drips hanging from it's metal arms were connected by clear plastic tubing to veins in her forearm. One small hand tightly grasped the IV pole and the other hand clung to her mother's arm, who was steering it.
As I got on the elevator, she gazed at me curiously.
Exchanging smiles with the mom, I exclaimed, 'Well, hello there! That pole ride looks like fun!'
She lowered her gaze shyly and leaned towards her mother.
I pressed the button for the main floor, proceeded to check my phone for missed calls and texts, then looked out the glass elevators to the indoor fountain and wood and glass lobby visible seven stories below.
'Today's my birthday,' a small voice piped up.
I looked away from the pretty view. 'Is that right? Well, a very happy birthday to you!' Then, smiling, I  asked, 'Did you wish for anything special?'
She remained silent. Just as I thought perhaps she hadn't heard my question, she looked up hesitantly.
'I wished to see my daddy. He's in heaven God called him'
I remained quiet. What do you say to that? Some people always know the right thing to say, but words often fail me.
The elevator doors opened on the next floor below, but no one got on.
After a few seconds I finally replied, 'God must've loved him very much.'
Glancing at the little girl's mom who was looking at me, I saw tears welled in her eyes though she smiled and maintained her composure.
Uncertain as to how I could provide some measure of comfort but overwhelmed by a need to somehow do so, I held her gaze in quiet understanding for a couple seconds until the elevator door opened.
Then we said goodbye and she headed away, wheeling her little girl along with her on the stainless steel, 6' tall pole.
I'd lost my appetite but still slowly headed towards the cafeteria.
It struck me how I complain about insignificant things when people like this young woman endure extraordinarily difficult trials with dignity and strength.
It's true Allah swt never places a burden on us greater than we can bear; may He give us the strength and patience to endure and persevere..

Garbanzo's Kidney

Sadly, sadly, the sun rose; it rose upon no sadder sight than the man of good abilities and good emotions, but incapable of their directed exercise, incapable of his own help and his own happiness, aware of the blight on him, and resigning himself to let it eat him away.

- C. Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities

----

I look forward to my nightly workout routine; it makes me feel energetic even after a day of work. The best part is seeing the results. The exercises become easier; and if prepared the right way, it's really amazing how many tasty food items you discover when you become calorie conscious.. kidney and garbanzo beans for example. I crave both on a regular basis now

But I really miss my rice and pahratay sometimes. Like tonight mama has the house smelling like biryani heaven and the pungent aroma is so tantalizing .. sigh

I just sprayed air freshner in my room, hopefully that'll help curb my craving.

Nine pounds down, eleven to go..

That's what she said.

Let me walk through fields of paper
touching with my wand
dry stems and stunted butterflies.

Everyone has a dream. Mine is to write a book.
I haven't decided yet if it'll be fact or fictional.
I'm too reserved for it to be entirely autobiographical - plus I have a fanciful imagination.. but, at least in part, I want it to be a reflection of my personal thoughts and experiences..
It'll most likely be a mixture of both.
Countless ideas float aimlessly through my mind. I can't wait to jot them down on paper and make sense of them. I think I have a title, though it's subject to change of course.
I may not publish my work. Part of me rebels at having my writing revised, polished, and edited until it barely resembles the original piece in order for it to considered more marketable to a particular audience.
Guess we'll see...
I know the time isn't right yet, but I can't wait to get started sometimes

It's Cliched.

But these are the happiest days of my life. There's no one particular reason.. don't have much of a reply for everyone around me who remarks on it. Can't explain it, just feel it.. not on the surface but inside.. like soul deep.  Feels like I waited a lifetime to experience this. Know it's probably my perspective that's changed more than anything, but I'd swear its contagious.
Sometimes, part of me wishes I could bottle it in case I need it later.. spray it on like perfume when I feel like I need it. Or spray it on my loved ones and people I care about who I feel need it.
Another part of me wants to possessively guard it. Protect it from anyone or anything that threatens it. I know, silly, right..?
Then I just laugh at myself, and thank Allah (swt) for the blessings in my life.

Life is good, Alhamdullilah

NAS - One Mic

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQdT3mqdRcU

All I need is one mic, one page, and one pen
~
This is crazy I'm on the right track I'm finally found
You need some soul searching the time is now

Pounds and Ounces.

There's nothing like the feeling you get after an intense workout, when every muscle protests in silent agony as tiny streams of perspiration dribble down your temples and the small of your back.
Getting off the treadmill, I tuned out the Bhangra  music flashing across the big screen, and - gulping down half a bottle of grape-flavored, ice-cold Propel - collapsed on the family room floor.
I reveled in the excruciating pain. Every calorie burned off in the past couple weeks was well worth every ounce of discomfort.

No pain, no gain, right?  Eight pounds down, twelve more to go...

Reflections.

To see the world in a grain of sand, and heaven in a wildflower
hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and find eternity in an hour.
(W. Blake)
----
Abbajan called Mama the most beautiful woman in the world tonight; she smiled and blushed prettily. I have to agree he's right. My parents are adorable people. Sometimes I look at them and think to myself how blessed I am to have them in my life. They remind me that God creates people not perfect, just perfect for each other. This epitomizes the concept of love for me. May they have at least an eternity to spend together in each others' presence.
Any good that exists in me by God's grace is a reflection of their example.

Charades.

Keep me away from the wisdom that does not cry,
the philosophy that does not laugh, and
the greatness that does not bow before children.
- Gibran
----
False words form on lips, forced smiles come effortlessly.
How easy it is to metamorphose... shed identities, don masks, and take part in charades for the sake of appearance. How incredibly simple to forgo principles, values, integrity... even sense of self, in attempts to conform or for purposes of self-gratification.
If only for an instant, we were to step outside of ourselves and observe. Would what we witness repulse us, I wonder; would it compel change.
But perhaps some are reluctant to relinquish a status quo that has been for so long ingrained, that it acceptably reflects  how they define themselves and their existence
Shrug.
Anyway, I'm getting late for work. Its a beautiful day out

Qari Waheed Zafar - Allahu

My friend selected this beautiful nasheed to be played instead of an entrance song at her wedding last week; it is one of my favorites

As sub hu bada min talati hii
W- al- laylu dajaa minv wafrati hee
Hai noor-e-sahar chehre say tere
Aur shab ki raunak Zulfoon say.
The light of dawn is from the radiance of Your (PBUH) face
The sparkle of the night is from the glimmer of your (PBUH) blessed Hair.

Allahu Allahu Allahu Allah
Kanz-ul-karami mowl-an-ni amii
Haad-il-umami li shariati hii.

Nimat Ka khazina hain Mawla
Ganjina-yi rehmat ke hai Aqaa
Hadi hai tammam-i ummat ke
Aur rahnuma hai shariat kay.
Our Master (PBUH) is a treasure of grace.
He (PBUH) is a treaure of Mercy
He (PBUH) is the guide of the entire nation,
showing us the way of the Sacred Law.

Allahu Allahu Allahu Allah
Saat-ish-shajaruu nataq-al-hajaruu
Shaqq-al-qamaruu bi ishaaratihii

Ungli ke ishare pair (trees) chale
Eijaz se pathar bol uthe
Aur chand huwa hai dhoo tukre
Angusht ke aik ishare se.
On the command of Your (PBUH) blessed Finger, the trees began to walk
The stones began to speak through Your (PBUH) greatness
The moon split into two
Upon one gesture of your (PBUH) blessed Finger.

Allahu Allahu Allahu Allah
Jibrilu ataa laylata asraa
W-ar-rabbu daaa fii hadrati hii

Jibril-i Amin paigham-i khuda
Lekar aye thay shab-i asra
Allah hane Arsh pay bulvayaa
Kurbat ka sharaf unko bakhsha.
Angel Jibrail (A.S) came with glad tidings from Allah (SWT) on the Night of Ascension
Allah (SWT) invited You (PBUH) to the heavens
And bestowed upon You (PBUH) the honor of intimacy.

Allahu Allahu Allahu Allah
Fa Muhammaduna huwa Sayiduna
Fal iszulana li ijaabetihi
So Mohammad hai apne aqaa
Isi naam se apni izzo baqaa.
Muhammed (PBUH) is our benefactor. He (PBUH) is our leader
This blessed Name [of Muhammed (PBUH)] will preserve our dignity
